5 Top City Getaways on a Student Budget
By Owen Burt
Need a break from assignments? Housemates doing your head in? Fancy getting away for a few days?
You’re in luck – us here at FRESHR have teamed up with Venture Travel to offer YOU no less than FIVE unmissable, cheap, city break deals. Flights AND hotels included. You can even get an exclusive £25 discount by using the FRESHR App. Literally the best excuse to spend your student loan…
Brussels – 8th March for 2 nights at Husa President Park – Room Only – £146pp
Beer and chocolate – enough said. This may be your staple diet in uni, but this isn’t cans of Galahad lager and knock-off Mars bars from ALDI, this is the real deal.
Husa President Park is a flashy hotel in the heart of a city where bottles of beer are just over a quid – mega. If you fancy giving your liver a break, Brussels is Instagram heaven, packed with mad architecture and street art, a guaranteed 50 likes (and free to look at).
Don’t get roped into paying for guided tours, you can do this yourself where you’re more likely to mix with actual locals rather than walking around with some lads you see in 42s every week.
Another good money saver is trying the street food here, stay away from Maccies and Hard Rock, the frietkot food vans sell everything from pukka steak baguettes to snails for the more adventurous.
Berlin – 22nd April for 3 nights at Hotel Berlin City Messe – Room Only – £149pp
A proper booze up, the Germans know how to do it. Even without beer goggles, this is a beautiful city. Another place that you can fully experience without spending much.
Start your day by going to a corner shop and getting a bag full of cheap cans, some of which are 10% (Carlsberg Elephant will knock your head off), and set off walking the city.
You can see the Berlin Wall, Brandenburg Gate and the Reichstag building for free, with plenty of proper German pubs to stop off at in between. You have to try Currywurst when in Berlin, cheap and easy to buy around almost every corner.
If the 2-pint steins or 10% cans of Carlsberg haven’t sent you to bed early, first of all well done. Secondly, the nightlife here is known to be one of the best in the world – Hostelworld voted it 3rd behind Hamburg and Copenhagen. Some of the clubs are open until 11am and entry to most is less than €10.
Dublin – 3rd March for 2 nights at the Sheldon Park Hotel – Room Only – £149pp
The perfect place for a weekend on the ale, what a place. This is arguably our best deal and it’s only a 30 minute flight away.
You must spend at least a few hours in Temple Bar, the Auld Dubliner and Oliver St. John Gogarty’s on O’Connell Street singing Sweet Caroline and Galway Girl, but be prepared to pay €6 a pint. We suggest that you burn some of that Guinness off and walk to one of the cheaper pubs, some doing pints no dearer than in Manny.
J.K. Stoutmans pub sells pints of Guinness for just €3.80 and has the Guinness Storehouse just around the corner, another must-do. The Guinness tour is around €20 but the view from the Gravity Bar at the top is worth it.
Eating is cheating in Dublin, a couple of pints of Guinness is like eating a big meal, saving you money on your food – don’t tell your mum though.
Amsterdam – 18th Feb for 2 nights at Campanile Amsterdam – Room Only – £165pp
We’re really spoiling you with these deals. Another one of Europe’s top cities – you can come here for a mad one with your mates or even a romantic break with your other half.
The Dam is another place where you can experience its culture without spending a penny.
First of all, don’t worry if you’re not here for a taste of what Amsterdam is famous for, there’s so much else to do. But if you are here for that, you will not be disappointed.
There’s all kinds of bars and pubs (and coffee shops) here; traditional Dutch, American, English, Irish, even some interesting ones on the infamous Red Light District, a place where you can spend a lot of money if you’re not careful. It’s still worth a walk down even if you do bring your other half here, just don’t let them see you looking.
You don’t need to waste time and money on the Heineken Experience or the Amsterdam Museum, remember you’re only here for 2 nights. Walking around the canals, streets, parks and the three main squares will show you more than enough of Amsterdam life, some of which you may want to un-see but it’s all part of it.
Milan – 22nd March for 3 nights, Viva Hotel – Bed & Breakfast – £169pp
This is for those of you who’ve found ‘the one’ and are looking to impress them – don’t worry we’ve got you covered.
Venture Travel have sorted you right out with this one, flights and a hotel in the centre of Milan with breakfast included for just £145 each with the FRESHR discount, don’t miss out.
I know we’ve mentioned ‘Instagram heaven’ previously, but this really is. Milan’s famous Milan Duomo cathedral, the Castello Sforzesco castle and the Palazzo Reale palace are all free to visit, and with the right cropping and filter, all of them guarantee at least 100 likes.
This is an expensive city, if you don’t know what you’re doing. A top tip from us here at FRESHR: Just by buying a drink or two at a bar/restaurant serving aperitivo, you can help yourself to the buffet – you’re welcome.
So if you fancy any of these trips – get in touch with Venture Travel now, and use the FRESHR App for £25 off – you can thank us later.
Call 01352 746117, or email firstname.lastname@example.org to book. Please note that prices of each deal we’ve mentioned are live, so can be subject to change.
